Destiny

About

In May 2006 the Destiny vision was initiated through a cooperative effort of Canaan Community Development Corporation and the Canaan Christian Church. The purpose of the Destiny vision is to provide resources and strategies that address the areas of social and economic empowerment thereby translating into visible and viable transformation in the Louisville community. The particular areas of concern for the Destiny vision are Economics, Education, Health and Violence.

Economics

Economic empowerment for the African-American community is imperative to bring about wealth creation to African-American families and our communities at large. We must give focused attention to employment, consumer education, housing/home ownership, personal financial management, and business development/entrepreneurship.

Education

Educational empowerment of African-American children in our community is essential in order to prepare them for the challenges they will encounter in today's society. Unfortunately, the facts show that African-American children are not where they need to be educationally, as evidenced by documented achievement gaps in learning.

Health

Despite the advances in health care and technology that have helped to extend the average lifespan in the United States to 77 years, the African-American community still continues to struggle and die prematurely as compared to their counterparts.

Violence

Too often, African-Americans have been identified as victims or perpetrators of violent crimes committed in Louisville. Unfortunately, the results of these violent acts have contributed to a growing number of other pathologies that plague the African-American community.

African-American Empowerment Foundation

The African-American Empowerment Foundation is part of the strategies of the vision of Destiny for economic empowerment. In order to transform and strengthen our community there must be substantive programs and initiatives that address the needs and concerns of our community. Often times worthy programs fail to get started or die because of a lack of funding. Many of the sources we looked to in the past for grants are drying up; and the remaining financial resources will not be sufficient by themselves to meet the need of financially undergirding the programs of empowerment for the African-American community.

The answer to this challenge is to create a foundation of our own that will serve as a financial resource to ensure that we have the funding to support the worthy programs that are positively affecting our community. The philosophy and strategy for building the foundation is centered on the idea of self-help. None of us can say that we have arrived at our station in life without the help of others. All of us have benefited from the community. Therefore we are asking every person to give one ($1.00) per week to the African American Empowerment Foundation. Each year grants are given to support programs that address the issues of economic empowerment, educational achievement, health awareness, and the eradication of violence and crime in our community.

The African-American Empowerment Foundation resides at the Louisville Community Foundation. As such the African-American Empowerment Foundation receives the status of a 501c3 non-profit operation. Monies given to this foundation can be used as a tax deduction. The Louisville Community Foundation will ensure that all monies contributed to the African-American Empowerment Foundation will only be utilized to fund qualifying programs. All checks should be made out to Canaan Community Development Corporation for the African-American Empowerment Foundation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment. Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?"
